Greetings, friends! I hope you are warm and safe this week. We have had some snow flurries the past couple of days but it is still winter and that is to be expected. Spring will arrive in her splendor and glory soon.
As we wrap up things in my office leading to the final reveal in a few weeks, I wanted to share with you a couple special touches that I am especially tickled with.
A place to hang art
One of the things I really wanted in this space was a magnet board to display photos, special quotes and art work. I knew what I wanted in my head. I just needed to round-up the pieces. One of the things I wanted to use were these great old salvaged trim pieces used around the doorways from the old farmhouse we tore down on our property. They just don’t make millwork like that anymore! I didn’t do anything to them but clean them up. I love the old, chippy history on them. I looked around the hardware stores for a piece of metal to use but for the size I needed it was going to run around $20.00. I knew I could do better than that. To the ReStore I went. I searched around and they had a scrap piece of metal HVAC venting that I did my best to unroll and thought it might be the right size. I went to the clerk and asked to borrow a magnet from her board and it worked so I snagged it up for $2.50. Much better! We used another piece of that waterbed plywood as a backer board, hammered out the metal, stapled it to the board then attached the old trim. It’s one of the first things you see as you come into my office and I love it.
Above the fridge cabinet there was a big blank space that I was hoping to hang a shelf to hold my tea cups. I had the back of an old chair that I had hung onto and our son, Lance, was kind enough to put a shelf cut out of old wood on the front for me. I was grateful but after it was done and up on the wall I couldn’t reach the little shelf! Off it came. I decided to use the chair back without the shelf as a pretty towel holder. It’s a fun piece of artwork on the wall, it fits the space perfectly, and it makes me happy.
I have a few more surprises for you next week.
Until then,
You are loved,

You are so clever and creative. I have seen your mind work firsthand and love how you can see the potential and recycle old things. Making new pretty things out of old ones is art. You are having fun and thanks for sharing.

I agree, Ames! It immediately adds depth and character to a room. So smart (and thrifty!) of your Dad! Have a great day! Love you!

When my parents tore the house down next to them my dad saved a bunch of the woodwork and he has used it in the additions in their house…looks so much better than trying to match new stuff with old.
