I recently read the most amazing quote shared by the actress Tracee Ellis Ross which she credits in changing her life. It stopped me in my tracks and I have to share it with you. Here it is:
I have spent the better part of 60 years trying to change myself in various ways. I was told I was “not enough” in one area or another. Not smart enough, thin enough, talented enough, athletic enough, domestic goddess enough, on and on ad nauseam. Make no mistake, I have become self-aware enough over the years to acknowledge and celebrate the areas in which I am enough, dare I say even more than enough. Many thanks go to Jack, my children and other of my beloveds. But there are all those years of negative underpinning at the base of my consciousness threatening to take over.
So here I have Pema Chödrön challenging me to make an UNCONDITIONAL relationship with myself. Right now, at the height I am, the weight I am, the intelligence I have and at my current level of pain.
An unconditional relationship. No conditions. No “not enoughs.” Can I accept myself today, just as I am?
Accepting myself as I am is something I am not particularly good at. Isn’t there always room for improvement? Or does accepting myself as I am mean accepting the me that needs improvement? It would have to be, right?
So the questions is, can I accept and love myself right now, today, this minute, just as I am?
Can I?
I will try. Because, regardless of those that have tried their best to undercut my magnificence, I am a child of the universe. The loving thought of the Creator. He thought I was worthy of being, so doesn’t that make me more than enough?
I believe it does. I choose to be loving, accepting, someone who seeks joy in every possible minute. One minute at a time.
You are amazing, marvelous, exceptional! Be daring enough to have an unconditional relationship with yourself where you are today.
You are loved,
